Page with Swastika Decoration

Format

Paper tickets on paper.

Date

c. 1912

Location

500 S State St, Ann Arbor, MI 48109

Description

This page contains an assortment of paper tickets from Claude S. Buchanan's time at the University of Michigan. The shape of the tickets was created before the formation of the Nazi Party, which adopted this emblem in 1920. In the late 19th and early 20th century, this symbol of good fortune, originating in Buddhism and Jainism, became a subject of orientalist fascination in the West. Swastikas appeared on anything from Coca-Cola ads to World War I-era American airplanes. It is highly unlikely that this symbol was associated with the Nazi Party, but it serves as a reminder of the various uses, culturally and internationally, that the swastika held before its notorious association with the evils of humanity.
