Description
This page features a gaggle of fraternity members belonging to Psi Upsilon, nicknamed Pylon, at the University of Michigan. The "Phi" chapter of the Psi Upsilon fraternity at the University of Michigan dates back to 1865 and the Chapter House, located at 1000 Hill Street, is a historic building designed by Albert Kahn, who was the architect of many of the classic buildings at the University of Michigan including the Burton Memorial Tower, Hill Auditorium, the Hatcher Graduate Library, and William L. Clements Library.
Claude S. Buchanan writes in his civilian diary about this fraternity and his late entrance and initiation into the Phi Chapter:
"Other than being "rushed" by several fraternities, my first few months were uneventful. One outstanding local fraternity (Pylon), continued to contact me, largely because a junior engineer thereof was the son of a wealthy Detroit friend of father's. Since (unknown fraternity symbols) made no move to rush me, by late fall, I finally accepted a Pylon pledge and moved into 1040 Nuron St. There, I became the permanent "roommate" of the junior engineer "Stub" Bassett and another Grand Rapids freshman "Bill" Jensen.
"Sub" and I later spent 1918 together at Dayton, Ohio. He then became first vice president of Detroit's leading "First National Bank" and now lives at the exclusive "surf club" of Naples, Fl.
My belated entry in Pylon proved rather unique. Since the other three freshman pledges had by then been already initiated, I had the very unusual distinction of being initiated into pylon all by myself. I will never forget the wonderful fellowship and guidance received from the persons shown in my first pylon group picture. I returned home for the xmas holidays, where I first met Mother Ruth, who at that time was father's secretary, then returned to Ann Arbor for final exams."
