Officer's Dependent Pass for Mrs. Ruth P. Buchanan, Wife of Claude Buchanan

Format

Printed paper card with laminated photographic print

Date

10-05-1944

Location

Naval Air Station, Vero Beach, Florida, USA.

Description

Naval Air Station in Vero Beach, Florida, was used as a military base and training facility from the years of 1942 to 1946. Personnel such as Claude and Ruth Buchanan would have lived nearby in lodging provided by the Vero Beach hotels and inns. During the height of World War II in Florida, tourism and the hotel industry suffered as gasoline rations severely limited "pleasure driving," or the nonessential use of personal vehicles. The military took over hotels to use as makeshift bases, quartering soldiers and their families.
