This certificate of service is an official record of Buchanan's years of service during World War II. The dates recorded on the back of this card indicate that his period of active duty in the relatively new United States Air Force ranged from July 21st, 1942, to August 31st, 1951, when he retired from service to resume the civilian duties he undertook in the Patents Branch at Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio. Records such as this certificate could have been used to receive the various benefits available to veterans after the wartime period.
