1949 Orlando Air Base Directory
Format
Paper pamphlet
Date
c. 1949
Location
Orlando, Florida, USA.
Description
This unassuming pamphlet is a rare directory for the Orlando Air Base, designated for Claude S. Buchanan during his service there. Claude was stationed at the Orlando Air Base from January 1949 until it was decommissioned in October of that same year. When this directory was published, Claude S. Buchanan was listed as a Lieutenant Colonel, the rank he was given as of August 7th, 1945.
The Orlando Army Air Base was established when the U.S. Army took over the Orlando Municipal Airport in September 1940 as World War II loomed in Europe. The base served as a major training center for pilots and fighter and bomber groups, and in 1942 became home to the Army Air Forces School of Applied Tactics, which trained personnel in the latest air tactics and doctrines.
