Format
Original blueprint
Date
06-12-1908
Location
Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA.
Description
A blueprint of a steam motorcycle, illustrated and designed by Claude S. Buchanan during his time at Central High School, which opened in 1857. It was the only High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan, until 1897, when Union High School was established to accommodate the city’s growing population during the turn of the century. The initial blueprint was completed by June 12th, 1908. The blueprint details the various parts of the blueprint, such as the burner, the throttle, the condenser, the check valve, gasoline and water deposits, and the air tank. This blueprint is an early example of Claude’s interest in engineering, which would blossom during his time taking part in the design of the famed Liberty L-12 engine during his military career.
