Postcard Depicting Post Chapel, Orlando Air Base, Orlando, Fla.

Format

Color photograph

Date

c. 1942

Location

McCoy Air Force Base, Orlando, Florida (now Orlando International Airport)

Description

The Post Chapel at Orlando Air Base, situated amidst lush, tropical garden environs, is unique in that it is the only chapel in the entire Army with its steeple rising from the ground up the side of the chapel. The reason for this was due to its proximity to the end of an airfield, where Army planes would routinely soar in the Chapel's direction. The Post Chapel has been moved to Thornton Park Historic District to preserve its legacy. Genuine Curteich-Chicago, a Chicago-based company renowned for advertising city features in the 20th century, originally printed the postcard pictured c. 1942.
