Postcard Depicting Oranges, Orlando, Florida

Format

Color postcard

Date

c. 1940

Location

Orlando, Florida, USA.

Description

The postcard shows a small glimpse into a typical orange orchard located in or around Orlando, Florida. The citrus industry was an important part of Florida's economy in the 20th century. Oranges, hailing from East Asia, were brought to Florida by the Spanish in the 16th century. Commercial cultivation did not start in Florida until 1818, with the first commercial groves growing their roots on Merritt Island. It was only during the drastic expansion of railroads after the Civil War that the citrus industry blossomed, turning into the iconic industry we know today. The postcard pictured was printed by Genuine Curteich-Chicago, a company renowned for advertising city features in the 20th century.
