Date

c. 1942

Location

365 Rickenbacker Dr, Orlando, FL 32803

Description

While now known as Orlando Executive Airport, the Orlando Air Base was used from the years of 1940-1946 to train military personnel during World War II. This postcard showcases the architectural style of this era through its signage. The Orlando Air Base was used to train Army and Air Force (back then known as Army Air Services) personnel and test aircraft prototypes and planes in active production. Originally opened as the Orlando Municipal Airport in 1928, the United States Army Air Base took control of the airport for use as a military training facility during World War II. This training depot would become Orlando Executive Airport in 1982, when the City of Orlando ceded control of the property to the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. The postcard pictured was printed by Genuine Curteich-Chicago, a company renowned for advertising city features in the 20th century.
