Possible DH-9 Biplane Turret
Format
Photographic print
Date
c. summer of 1919
Location
McCook Field, Dayton, Ohio, USA.
Description
A photographic print of a possible DH-9 Biplane's turret, outfitted with two .303 Lewis machine guns. DH-9 Biplane bombers were withdrawn from service in 1920. All four DH-9 aircraft, outfitted with a Liberty 12A engine, were scrapped after the Armistice that ended the First World War was signed on November 11th, 1918. Colonel Claude S. Buchanan helped design the Liberty 12A engine, which was ubiquitous in WWI biplane aircraft, and also served as a Liaison Engineer for the British DH-9 model, specifically designing its unique gunsight. The "twin mount" setting of the Lewis machine guns, as well as the swiveling "Scarff" ring mount, was considered rather unusual for the DH-9.
