Curtiss 18-B “Hornet” Prototype Biplane
Format
Photographic print
Date
c. summer of 1919
Location
McCook Field, Dayton, Ohio, USA.
Description
A photographic print of a rare Curtiss 18-B “Hornet” Biplane prototype. Introduced by the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company in 1919, the "Hornet" was intended to serve as a complementary "fighter" version of the Curtiss 18T "Wasp." The only flying prototype of the Curtiss 18-B, serial number 40058 P-86, crashed on McCook Field during early flight trials. The other Curtiss 18-B was delivered for static testing; its fate is unknown. As a result, the Curtiss 18-B model was not ordered into official production.
