Format

Photographic print

Date

c. summer of 1919

Location

Description

A photographic print of a DH-4 Liberty Biplane cockpit, complete with a Liberty engine. Designed by the legendary British aviation pioneer Sir Geoffrey de Havilland, the DH-4 was the most widely used bomber of the First World War, equipped with two seats and capable of defending itself against a barrage of attacks. The DH-4 would enter American manufacture, with the new Liberty 12A engine replacing the original 375 hp Rolls-Royce engine. The DH-4 was officially retired by the United States Army Air Service in 1932.
